Georges Rouault

Georges Rouault (1871-1958)

Georges Rouault began his artistic career as an apprentice to a stained glass designer. He began painting under Moreau in 1892 alongside Matisse at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He briefly associated with Les Fauves in 1904 and proved it was possible to be an independent yet wholly committed Modernist. He made watercolors and gouaches in expressive colours, which founded his reputation as a Fauvist painter. Rouault used his abilities in many outlets including set design, costuming, illustration, and ceramics. Raised a Catholic, his work often displays allegorical images of man’s struggle to hold on to his faith.
